Dr Mahathir shrugs off slipper garland insult

2009/09/18

Only insults from Umno hurt me, he says.

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is neither sad nor angry by the “slipper” insult hurled at him by an MIC member.

The former prime minister said he was not affected by it. “Nothing would have happened to me.”

Instead, he said, he would have felt angry and saddened if such an insult had been made by Umno members.

“This is not the first time I have been insulted. People might have forgotten how Umno leaders had insulted me. Nazri (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz) and the previous menteri besar of Kedah wanted me expelled from Umno.

“However, then, no one gave any reaction. No one dared to say anything,” he said.

On Sunday, during the MIC’s annual general assembly, the deputy chief of MIC’s Paya Besar division in Pahang, M. Sukumaran, had made a suggestion that “a garland of slippers” be hung around a portrait of Dr Mahathir at Umno’s headquarters to show MIC’s dissatisfaction over alleged interference by the former prime minister in MIC affairs.

The action drew flak from all around, including from political leaders, non-governmental organisations and the general public.

"Suddenly, I have become popular. Everyone is defending me. As I said, previously when I was insulted, and asked to be expelled from Umno, no one showed any reaction. Why the reaction now?

"Then no one defended me. At least, not openly. Some did on the quiet, but the big names dared not," Dr Mahathir said, adding that he was saddened that people from his own partyand who sat with him in his cabinet had resorted to such an action.

It was insults from Umno people that hurt him but this one from an MIC member was like "pouring water on a duck's back", he said.

"I have been with Umno since its formation (except for short spells when he was expelled and when he resigned as a member). The people who talked bad about me weren't even born yet."

Dr Mahathir added that if he were back in power now, he would drop these people from the cabinet.

On Sukumaran's wish to apologise to him, Dr Mahathir said: "Apologise also okay, don't want to apologise also, doesn't matter. It's only when my own people hurl insults at me that I feel slighted."

He said Sukumaran had now become a victim of his own actions.

On Tuesday, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced that Sukumaran had been suspended pending a full inquiry on the outburst.

Meanwhile, Samy Vellu said he will personally apologise to Dr Mahathir over the "slipper garland" insult.

He said he would seek an appointment with the former prime minister to tender his apology over the incident.

"I will meet him personally to explain the whole episode and extend my apology."

The MIC chief said he and the MIC regretted that the incident had happened.

"I have always had the highest respect for Dr Mahathir. He is a great leader and a statesman."

He said Dr Mahathir had brought tremendous development to the country and had united the people.

"He will always be respected by us and by all Malaysians." -- Bernama

Jawab pihak kami (Blog Ibnu Hasyim)...

Sengaja saya jawab lambat isu ini, kerana:

1..Nak dengar pandangan tuan-tuan dulu.

3..Baru saya jawab fasal hina Islam...

Tapi BN penjarakan & bunuh ramai orang PAS termasuk ulama. Tolak hudud, rampas royalti minyak & tak bertegas dengan rasuah sehingga hak rakyat, orang Islam-Melayu tergadai.

Memang bunyinya DAP macam hina Islam.

Kita sambung lagi coming soon. Terima kasih kerana diajak berbincang supaya terbuka fikiran. Allahu aklam.
