BROADBAND SLOWER THAN A PIGEON IN SOME COUNTRIES

I heard on BBC World Service radio an hour ago of this very interesting story. A pigeon was used to compare with the data transfer using a broadband connection in South Africa. A 4GB memory stick was attached to the pigeon called Winston as the data carrier. The data destination was somewhere 60 miles away. Winston took two hours to finish off the job, whereas the poor Telkom ADSL only did 4% of the data.

The story gives an interesting perspective commonly known in the IT circle. Sometimes mixing old and new methods can be the best method of achieving something. A same analogy is to copy the huge amount of data into a hard disk, ask an office boy to carry it in a bus, to the remote office for offloading the data. Not only is it faster, but it is more cost effective.

But I think the issue here is that many broadband service providers are not true to what they claim to be offering. And I believe Malaysia is no exception, as I have heard many many complaints from Streamyx users of pathetic performance over their broadband lines. Worse, outages in Malaysia seem common and usually the service providers do not own up to the problem, not even a notice of any problem in their infrastructure. Such endemic problem is a reflection of a monopolistic environment in the telco industry in Malaysia.

I am floating this up just to solicit feedback and discussion from broadband users. I count myself fortunate as the home broadband here in Singapore has been pretty reliable of and high performance.

Mystery ‘police’ after Sivanesan?

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 – After being told to report to Jenjarom police station near Banting tonight, T. Sivanesan, who claimed anti-graft officers had assaulted him last year, went along with lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, only to find that no one there knew what was going on.

Sivanesan’s testimony at the Teoh Beng Hock inquest yesterday suggested Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers torture people during questioning.

Tonight, several persons came to his home in Jenjarom but he was not home at the time. It is unclear if these persons were policemen.

The DAP’s Lim Kit Siang had sent out tweet messages earlier saying persons he was told were policemen had gone to Sivanesan’s house to arrest him. Since he was out, they apparently left a message for him to report to the Jenjarom police station.

But when he arrived at the station with his lawyer Gobind, policemen there were unaware of any such request.

Earlier today, the MACC failed in its bid at the High Court in Petaling Jaya to remove Sivanesan’s damaging evidence that its men torture people during questioning.

The national anti-graft body had objected strongly to letting Sivanesan testify as a witness in the coroner’s court tasked to find out the cause of Teoh’s death.

Sivanesan told the coroner’s court yesterday that he had been badly beaten up by Selangor graft busters during interrogation at their office in Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam last year. He had to be hospitalised for four days.

Photographs detailing his injuries and a police report filed in September last year complaining about MACC brutality were admitted as evidence.

MACC’s legal director Datuk Abdul Razak Musa, who is holding a watching brief at Teoh’s inquest, insists that any evidence from Sivanesan, who is a suspect in a separate and ongoing investigation by the Selangor MACC, is “not relevant” to efforts to establish how Teoh died.

He maintained the same position in the High Court today but Judge Yeoh Wee Siam dismissed the MACC’s application to review and revise the ruling made by the coroner’s court. She also denied the national anti-graft body’s bid to postpone the inquest from continuing tomorrow, pending their appeal at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Mirzan Mahathir, the eldest son of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was recently appointed to the board of San Miguel Corp, the biggest food and beverage conglomerate in the Philippines and the owner of San Miguel Brewery Inc.

San Miguel Corp told the Philippines stock exchange last week about Mirzan’s appointment which is to represent the interests of Q-Tech Alliance Holdings Inc on the board.

Q-Tech, a Manila-based investment company in which Mirzan has a stake in, recently acquired a 19.9 per cent share in San Miguel Corp for 39.61 billion pesos (RM2.9 billion).

It bought the stake from Japan’s Kirin Holdings, which used the funds to help finance the acquisition of a 43 per cent stake in San Miguel Brewery Inc.

With this latest corporate exercise, San Miguel Corp still maintains a 51 per cent stake in San Miguel Brewery Inc.

San Miguel Brewery controls 95 per cent of the Philippine beer market. The company has made San Miguel Beer for more than a century. The beer is brewed in the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, and is sold in 60 markets worldwide, according to the company’s Web site.

San Miguel Corp has been selling its food and beverage assets since 2007 to expand into the mining, infrastructure and property industries.

Mirzan’s involvement in the deal, while a sound investment decision, has raised some eyebrows among Malaysia’s conservative Muslim community.

Since news of Q-Tech’s acquisition of San Miguel Corp shares began circulating here, a number of news blogs have used it to attack Dr Mahathir’s Muslim credentials.

Mirzan’s corporate forays have not been without controversy.

He once controlled Konsortium Perkapalan Bhd when Dr Mahathir was prime minister, but was forced to sell its shipping assets to Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC), in what critics said then was a bailout.

Selangor under siege II? Selangor PR Government, please wake up!

1. In my previous article, I wrote about BN/UMNO strategy in winning back the state of Selangor and I feel the article would not be complete if I don’t write anything about PR in Selangor. In a way, indirectly the current Selangor PR government is also creating opportunity for UMNO (BN) to destabilize the government their public display of the disagreement between the various component party leaders.

2. The success of PR to form the government in the recent GE in Selangor, notably it is due to voter’s distribution ethnic, gender and age, education level and high internet penetration. The hate for BN (and its component) parties plays a significant role in changing the people mind set. The high percentage of non Malays in certain parts of semi urban Selangor also helps to tip the balance in PR favor.

3. While the Selangor government is under siege the biggest mistake they can make is being defensive. In any battle, it is a proven thing that the side that is being defensive always ends up losing in the long run. Temporary defense is a fair move but ultimately to ensure victory; PR has to be on the offensive. In my opinion, since elected, PR has been a defensive government.

4. It is time for PR to be on the offensive. Though the phrase of “being in the offensive” sounds harsh but it is an appropriate phrase to be use under these circumstances. It is time to be offensive with the objective of meeting people’s expectations as well as strengthening their internal political structure. Once people needs are being met then it will strengthen the peoples trust in the government.

5. First offensive action must be focused towards the PR loose coalition. As mentioned in the first paragraph that PR component leaders seem to provide the fuel for BN to burn their lamps. Their inability to discuss their discords behind closed doors is a matter of concern. Everybody wants to be a champion and they champion their cause via the media. Khir Toyo was right when he said that, even BN do not do anything the Selangor government will fall because indeed that is the perception that they give to the public.

6. Structurally PR is a loose coalition. It does not have a firm structure like BN. Because of this, there is no discipline among the various party leaders where they actually attack each other. Moving forward, it is paramount that this structure is put in place. There is an immediate need to disciplined its leaders and strengthen the relationship between various component members at every level of the community.

7. The second line of offensive lies with the meeting of the Rakyat expectation. Though the government seems to show that it is clean and transparent, the impact of the cleanliness and transparent has not reach the people in the streets. The people need to see some measurable changes. The government needs to show the people the differences before and after they took over the government. At the moment it seems the government is fighting fire all over the place.

8. Most of the rakyat does not have the access to the pinnacle of power in Selangor. Not everyone knows what is happening in Shah Alam on the day to day basis. However the people are closer to the local government administration which is either the local authorities or the land office. The local authorities is represents the government. At the moment the people are measuring if there is any significant differences since the PR government took over.

9. From my perspective, the performance of the local authorities has not change. The quality of service is the same. In my area, grass cutting, drain cleaning and other cleaning service are not as per contract. My drains are not cleaned regularly. Grasses are not cut on schedule. Our environment becomes messy. The relationship between the people and MPAJ is still the same, one complains and the other party reacts at its own sweet pace. Preventive maintenance and quality service monitoring is not in place.

10. Selangor government needs to understand that the problem that lies in the management of the local authority. Despite having a partially non political council member, there is no significant change. The local authority is short handed and they are not leveraging on technologies to improve their operations. The best brains are not in the local authority. The current Selangor government needs to address these issues.

11. To stay afloat, PR needs to identify their weaknesses and improve their services. This will win peoples heart and ensure that they will continue to govern. How many people realized that UMNO already started their machinery in winning peoples heart via their 1-Malaysia Community Centre? That can be seen in Bukit Antarabangsa. Being the government, I expect Selangor PR to do more. In part III, I hope to dwell more into the micro details.

Sekurang kurangnya PR perlu diberi peluang bertemu dengan pengundi ini bagi menerangkan manifesto pilihanraya mereka.

Pengundi POS hanya mengundi melalui maklumat dari media kerajaan, sudah pasti maklumat yang disampaikan berat sebelah dan langsung tidak memberi ruang maklumat kempen PR untuk sampai kepada pengundi ini.

SPR sepatutnya berlaku adil termasuk pengundi POS sepatutnya tidak releven lagi di PRK bukan PRU.

PR perlu bertindak dan menekan SPR dalam hal ini.

Pakatan’s non-existent New Media strategy

In the aftermath of the March 8, 2008 election, many articles were written about how the opposition managed to make ful use of New Media (the Internet, SMS and VCDs) and how the government simply had no clue.

While it’s true that the Pakatan parties benefitted tremendously from New Media activities around that time, not much of it can be attributed to the efforts of those parties.

Yes, blogs helped the opposition get its message across but many of the bloggers were not originally party members nor were they doing it for the party. People like Jeff Ooi, Tony Pua and Elizabeth Wong were bloggers long before they became opposition politicians. They just happened to be bloggers who supported the opposition.

The opposition parties can be credited for bringing them into the opposition but they can’t take credit for their effective use of blogs.

Similarly, the various online news sites like Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider and MalaysiaVotes (later changed to The Nut Graph) all carried alternative news that the mainstream media wouldn’t carry, such as opposition activities and press statements.

This helped to spread Pakatan’s message but the opposition can’t take credit for the emergence or success of such sites. At most the opposition can be credited for being generally supportive of these sites.

If you look at the opposition’s use of the Internet during the March 8, 2008 campaign period, it was quite pathetic. It was hard even to figure out which ceramah was being held where. There was no central hub where you can get reliable information on ceramahs.

Fast forward to September 2009. About a year and a half later, have things improved on the New Media front?

Yes, but not for the opposition. Najib’s 1Malaysia website might not exactly be the epitome of what a good political website should be but it’s friendlier and more comprehensive than anything the opposition leaders have to offer.

Anwar Ibrahim has an official homepage that seems comprehensive enough but it’s boring as heck. It certainly doesn’t show him to be web-savvy. Very Web 1.0 despite the presence of links to MySpace, Facebook and Friendster. It’s just so very static.

Hadi Awang’s official homepage looks to be a blog although it has links to other features. It’s all in BM and hardly appealing to anyone other than those who already support him.

No doubt, some individual leaders are web-savvy, most notably Lim Kit Siang, who has a vibrant blog and a popular Twitter feed. But he’s an exception rather than the rule. And he doesn’t seem to have a comprehensive official homepage. It’s more like a placeholder for his blog.

As for the coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, I can’t seem to find an official homepage. There are a couple of blogs. Here and here. Are they official? No idea. Are they good? No.

Instead of just criticizing Pakatan for not having a coherent New Media strategy (or any New Media strategy for that matter), here are some ideas they should consider.

1. There should be comprehensive, official homepages for
- Pakatan as a coalition (non-existent to my knowledge)
- Each party (the existing ones could use a facelift… actually major surgery)
- Each key leader (the prominent ones)

2. Elements that the sites should have:

- Rapid response FAQ (dealing with breaking news and hot issues)

- Blog

- Links to relevant news stories

- Schedule of events

- Speeches, press releases, policy papers etc…

- Press clippings

- Embedded Twitter and Facebook feeds

- Embedded Photo slideshow

- Embedded videos and audio (podcast)

- Donation box

- Press download section containing pictures and other material that they can download for use without having to track down the communications officer for media resources.

Example of how New Media can be used to great effect. Today, there was a fracas in Shah Alam when agent provocateurs decided to disrupt the town hall meeting to discuss the temple relocation issue. UMNO leaders and government controlled press will spin this as evidence that Selangor doesn’t know how to deal with sensitive racial issues.

What can the Selangor government do? It can go on the offensive and expose the cow-head protestors for what they are: Agent provocateurs.

If it had a New Media strategy in place, it could do the following:

i) Live Twitter of what’s happening from Selangor State Government’s perspective
ii) Video feed — live if possible but later a professionally-produced version for YouTube that again highlights the fact that the cow-head disruptors were there as agent provocateurs
iii) Picture slideshow of what happened, from Selangor State Government’s perspective
iv) FAQ account of what happened, again from Selangor State Government’s perspective
v) Podcast interview with Khalid Samad, Khalid Ibrahim and some witnesses on what happened there.

After that, alert the media, especially Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider and various bloggers of the resources above. And push them out through Facebook, Twitters and so on. That would effectively deflect whatever spin the Barisan operatives would try to put on the news.

Can they do this? Of course they can. They just need to get the infrastructure and people in place. Yes, and it takes money. You want to do it well, you have to put in the resources.

Before anyone says “But the opposition is poor”, please don’t insult our intelligence. No doubt, Pakatan doesn’t have the resources of Barisan but Pakatan controls four states (used to be five) and have seen a surge in support from the public and businesses (and businessmen) since the historic March 8, 2008. They can well afford to have a good New Media presence.

It’s just a question of whether they believe it’s necessary. I suspect that some Pakatan leaders
i) Are complacent and believe that Pakatan is actually on the cutting edge of New Media (it’s not)
ii) Don’t believe New Media will play such a crucial role in 2013 (it will).

I’ll tell you why 2013 will be truly a cyber-election.
i) A whole bunch of younger people will become eligible to vote — they are the Net-savvy generation, the digital natives.
ii) Broadband, though very iffy right now, will be ubiquitous with 4G and WiMAX being widely available everywhere.
iii) Cheap smart phones will flood the market. People will be accessing information through their phones. This includes text, pictures, audio and video.

Most importantly, Barisan will be gearing up for it. Also, today, many of the most proactive and prominent bloggers, like Rocky’s Bru, are pro-government not pro-opposition. Can Pakatan afford to sit idle and be left behind in New Media?

Seperkiraan aku asal keluargaku dari Indonesia, Jawa.

Umur datuk kurang lebih 10 tahun kesini bersama

ahli keluarga yang lain.

Apa perlu kita sesama satu Nusantara berantakan,

yang rugikan umat Islam sesama.

Mungkin bisa kita menegur pimpinan yang "goblok"

di Malaysia, dengan cara diplomasi, itu lebih baik.

Sebab di Malaysia juga rakyatnya berperang dengan

pemerintahnya sendiri. Kebanyakkannya sudah

tidak mahu lagi pemerintah yang ada 52%

telah menolak dari segi undi popular.

Ayuh kita bekerjasama bukan berantakan.

Jalinkan kesefahaman sememang mengikut Anwar Ibrahim,

Tuan Guru Nik Aziz dan yang lain.

Bukan soal siapa kuat sekarang, soalnya siapa yang lebih bijak.

Berperang hanya kerana berebut budaya?

Kelangsungan yang merebut juga ngak ngerti apa budayanya sendiri.

Budaya mengimport, apa kekurangan kita?

Dari dulu kita sudah pandai mengimport, jika dulu Melayu begitu rajin dan mengetahui kelebihan mereka kita tidak akan mengimport, apa antara yang diimport?

1) Selain dari barang dagangan memanglah itu perlu

2) Mengimport rakyat asing, dulu kita import India untuk jadi buruk di ladang, import Bangsa Cina untuk bekerja dilombong. Zaman IT pun kita import pakar pakar India balik duduk di Cyberjaya silicon valley kita nun. Kita mengimport pakar pakar dari barat US dan lain lain.

3) Kita sering juga mengimport BUDAYA orang, saya menerima email tentang asal usul tarian poco-poco. Saya memfokuskan budaya mengimport budaya ini.

Persoalannya : Apa kurang budaya kita sehingga kita mahu mengimport budaya orang?. Apa perlu kita ada kementerian yang menjaga akan budaya dan warisan jika ia tidak dapat digembleng memantapkan warisan kita?. Benar kita datang dari pelbagai budaya dan adat.

Adakah kita sudah jelas IDENTITI kita sebagai rakyat Malaysia yang mewarnai siapa diri kita sebenarnya. Mana identiti kita?. Sebab itu rakyat Malaysia sudah hilang jati diri mereka. Kerana mereka sendiri tidak mengenal diri mereka sebagai rakyat Malaysia.

Apa yang memburukkan bangsa Malaysia ini adalah menerapan budaya asing dalam jiwa rakyat Malaysia, anak mudanya diterapkan dengan budaya sub culture yang merosakkan. Budaya barat, budaya budaya import ini langsung tidak ada makna dalam maksud pembangunan jati diri Rakyat Malaysia.

Kesimpulan : Seharusnya penekanan kepada BUDAYA MALAYSIA dimulai dengan sistem pendidikan kita, apa cukup sistem pendidikan kita menanam sifat tahu, cinta dan amali budaya kita yang pelbagai ini. Sudahkah kita mempunyai kerangka pendidikan budaya antara ciri ciri jati diri dan identiti kita sebagai rakyat Malaysia. Apa yang dikatakan 1Malaysia jika rakyat tidak mengenali siapa diri mereka sebenar. Apa itu 1Malaysia jika rakyatnya pelbagai dan caca merba budayanya, lebih bobrok jika mereka menjadi bangsa ikut ikutan saja. Mudah diperkotak katikan dan diterubuk kekuatan dalamannya.

PAS di Bagan Pinang

Oleh kerana tempat itu mempunyai ramai tentera elok PAS menurunkan ramai veteran tentera dan membuka satu KEM (MARKAS) khas Veteran Tentera PAS di Bagan Pinang nanti.

Tujuan adalah mengimbangi keperluan menjaga ketenteraman awam yang mungkin akan dicetuskan oleh UMNO BN. Melalui agenda perkaumannya. Termasuk menggunakan ahli ahli gelap PEKIDA.
